Short summary of the chapters

Chapter 1

Cole Matthews, 15 years old, has half of his life been breaking the laws. Now he is applying for the Circle of Justice to keep him out of jail.

Chapter 2

Cole is finally on the island where he has to live for a year. Garvey and Edwin are going to this process with Cole. When Cole is left alone anger takes over and he burns down his cabin and supplies.

Chapter 3

Cole has lost control as he was watching the cabin burning. After the shelter was gone Cole is trying to escape. He wants to swim to another island where nobody can find him.

Chapter 4

Cole gets a flash back of the first Hearing Circle. He met the Keeper before the Circle starts. During this circle Cole sees for the first time Peter after he had beaten him up. Peter has serious damage to his back, but Cole only wanted to make sure he didn't go to jail.

Chapter 5

Cole has burned all the supplies and the cabin. He tried to escape, but the water was to cold and the tide wasn't the right way, because it drove him straight back to the island. When Cole woke up the next morning he saw for the first time the Spirit Bear. When Cole didn't look for a moment it disappeared.

Chapter 6

Cole is planning his escape again. He wants to leave again tomorrow morning when the tide pushes him out of the bay. He thinks back at the moment the Cicle decides that Cole has to be banished to Alaska.

Chapter 7

Cole saw the Spirit Bear again but when he turned his back to bear to search for his spear  the bear disappeared again. After a few hours it came back and Cole ran to the bear with his spear, convinced that the bear would leave, but the bear stayed on his place, like it was part of the landscape.

Chapter 8

Cole got in a fight with the Spirit Bear. Cole is very badly wounded. His arm and pelvis are broken and he has very deep wounds on his arm and chest. When the bear let go and Cole lay there he realised being on this island is living his worst nightmare.

Chapter 9

Cole is finally beginning to see that he had never controlled anything. He realised this because this afternoon he was irritated by baby sparrows in a tree near him. But the tree fell in the heavy  storm. Cole gathered all his strengt to see if the baby sparrows were okay, but they weren´t.

Chapter 10

Cole made the decision that he didn´t want to die yet, but he has to eat. So he is doing everything to survive, and he being eaten by mosquitos and mugs. He is asking himself where the at.oow the blanket Garvey gave to him  as a sign of trust.

Chapter 11

Cole is using all his power to find some food and keep the seagulls away from him. In the evening the Spirit Bear showed up again. Cole didn´t like the fact he couldn´t protect himself.

Chapter 12

The day after Cole saw the Spirit Bear again he didn´t feel such a terror as the night before. Cole felt he was dying so he touched the Spirit Bear just to know how a bear felt. When Cole was on the edge of dying Edwin ( the Tlingit elderly) and Garvey rescued him.

Chapter 13

Cole is brought to a hospital and Garvey stayed with him. His mother visited him next day. Then he heard that his father was arrested. Cole decided he would change his life from this moment on.


Chapter 14

Six months later Cole returned to the detention centre. Everyone is saying he has to go to jail, but the Hearing Circle continues. When they meet they all say how disappointed they are in Cole.

Chapter 15

The Hearing Circle continues meeting without Cole. Edwin is going for cole to the meetings. When Garvey and Edwin came on a day visit Cole in the detention centre they announced that Cole could go back to the island. Only this time he he has to sell his belongings for money for supplies and he has to built his own shelter.

Chapter 16

After a month of preparations Cole is finally going back to the island. Garvey and Edwin will stay with im for a few days to give him tips for building the cabin.

Chapter 17

When cole after a lot of tossing and turning finally fell sleep. Edwin wakes him up quite early. They went to a little pond the pool was really cold. In the pond cole gets a lesson of Edwin that he has to look at the happy things in life and not being angry all the time.

Chapter 18

That evening cole was proud of what he managed to do today. In the evening they danced the whale dance because they saw a whale today. The dances are to show what you have learned from the animal you saw. The next day they went again to the pond. After the pond Cole has to carry a rock, who represents his ancestors. Once he carried the rock up the hill the rock turned into his anger and then he has to push it down the hill to push his anger away.

Chapter 19

After the fight with  Edwin and Garvey, Cole has to dance the wolf dance alone. But he did it. The next morning he has to go alone to the pond. In the pond Cole finds out why it helps to sit there. After that he carried the rock up the hill. Cole didn´t look forward but backwards to see how far he got, and then he shook  off his anger.

Chapter 20

The evening before Garvey and Edwin left they danced the Spirit Bear dance, because Cole might have seen the Spirit Bear again. The next day the three men went together to the pond and walked up the hill. after Garvey explained some things about the cabin it was time to leave.

Chapter 21

The first day he was alone Cole didn´t go to the pond because he hadn´t slept good. But that day he felt very angry. He found a log and he is going to make a totum pole. Next day Edwin visited him and cole asked why they mde totum poles. He said it is the story to of life.

Chapter 22

Cole is going to search for the Spirit Bear becuase he hadn´t seen him anymore. That night he tried to danced the dance of anger but he only felt awkward about it. When he went that night to bed he had two quetsions: What was the one thing that would help him heal? And how could he become invisible to see the Spirit Bear?

Chapter 23

When Cole woke up he knew how to be invisible, and then he saw the Spirit Bear again. That night he was ready to dance the dance of anger. He imaged the time he was for the first time on the island. He danced half night.

Chapter 24

Cole has had tough months because it was winter and it was to cold to do anything. When Edwin came he told that it was getting worse with Peter. He tried to commit suicide. Cole knew how to help Peter, but Edwin didn´t want to listen. Edwin came back the other day and Cole told him his idea.

Chapter 25

Edwin said it wasn´t possible to bring Peter to the island, but after two weeks they came, Peter and his parents, Garvey and Edwin. Cole told the group how he was changed and what he has done on the island so far.

Chapter 26

Peter didn´t want to talk to Cole. Cole had to sleep in a leaping tent, but one night it rained so hard that Peter came outside to invite Cole inside.

Chapter 27

Peter is very mean to Cole. he destroyed the Spirit Bear on Cole Totums pole. After that they found a log for Peter too. Peter wanted to be alone so Garvey and Cole went hiking. When they returned Peter had made a new Spirit Bear for Cole.

Chapter 28

After Peter had beaten up Cole he told Cole he was very scared. They became invisable and saw the spirit bear. Cole passed the at.oow to Peter as a sign of trust. and then they carved together something in Cole´s totum pole.
